End of last year Glashütte Original launched the Senator Observer 1911 Julius Assmann, a limited edition in white gold and their first Baselworld 2012 novelty. Today they add two new versions of the Senator Observer in stainless steel.

Creating beautiful chronometers, is something Glashütte Original is very good at, as they already proved with the Senator Chronometer. And it’s great news that this model will be available in stainless steel as well!

And again it features the magnificent panorama date that Glashütte Original is famous for. It is the only big date where both date wheels are on the same level; something that simply looks great. The panorama date is positioned above the 6 o’clock position and this gives the dial a very balanced look. I love the attention for detail Glashütte Original shows with the black date wheel with white date font. This sort of detail was unheard of a few years ago and I’m pleased to see GO, among other, pay attention to these small but significant details.

Both the silver dial and the grey dial are built up from three separate layers of lacquer and have a finely textured, grained surface. On the grey dial version this finely grained dial will give it a matte look. At the 9 o’clock position is the subsidiary seconds dial and the power reserve display is positioned at 3 o’clock.

The middle part of the three part stainless steel case, that measures 44 mm in diameter, has a lovely satin finish. The bezel in the front and the case back are both polished. Besides the signed crown, you can see a small push corrector. This is to reset the seconds hand and can be used when setting the time exact to the second.

Many mechanical watches feature a so-called hacking system, which is a system that stops the seconds hand when the crown is pulled out when setting the time. Glashütte Original has a reset mechanism that not only stops the seconds hand, but also resets it to zero. However the main purpose of a chronometer or observation watch, is to run to extreme perfection. When the crown is pulled and the seconds hand stops or resets, this usually means that the balance is stopped. This is something that cause extra wear and tear in the mechanics and also has negative influences on the watch’s the going rate.

So Glashütte Original came up with an improvement, that allows for the seconds hand to be reset, while the balance keeps oscillating. Sounds like a perfect solution to me. Only the fact that it has to be operated with a push pin, is something that might prevent owners to use this feature a lot.

The Senator Observer is available with silver or grey dial, with either a black alligator strap or a ‘vintage’ brown calfskin strap with a stainless steel folding clasp.

Yesterday we reported about a pre-SIHH launch of a German manufacture, today we can report about a novelty from another German manufacture! The new Glashütte Original Senator Observer 1911 Julius Assmann.

Glashütte Original amazed friend and foe with their Senator Chronometer, which was released at Baselworld 2009. The new Senator Observer 1911 vaguely reminds us of that magnificent watch. It features the same functions, however the movement of the Senator Observer 1911 is an automatic caliber 100-14.

Let’s start by mentioning that this is (unfortunately) a limited edition of only 25 pieces. This splendid timepiece, bears the name Senator Observer, in honour of Julius Assmann’s observation watches and Amundsen’s achievement in reaching the South Pole.

The Senator Observer 1911’s lacquered silver-grain dial is built up slowly from three separate layers of white lacquer, the third of which features a finely textured, silver-grain surface. The dial shows a small seconds subdial at 6 o’clock and a power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock. Glashütte Original’s characteristic panorama date display is placed at 6 o’clock.

The stainless steel hands are polished and blued and around the dial is a milled railroad chapter ring and black Arabic numerals.

The Senator Observer Limited Edition 1911 – Julius Assmann comes in a round white gold case, with a diameter of 44 mm, and is complemented by a brown calfskin strap. The case back is engraved with the limited edition number (01/25) and printed on the sapphire crystal are the dates of Amundsen’s arrival at the South Pole and its centennial anniversary: 14 Dec. 1911 – 14 Dec 2011 and the name Julius Assmann – Glashütte i/SA, and “Tribute to R. Amundsen”.

Inside ticks caliber 100-14, an exquisitely finished self-winding movement. Because traditional observation watches used hand-wound movements, Glashuette Original has chosen to equip the Senator Observer 1911 with an ‘Ab Auf’ (Up/Down) indicator like on old observation watches.

The base movement has a reset mechanism, which makes the second hand jump to zero and makes it easier to set the time, precise to the second. In contrast to other reset mechanisms, the second hand is not coupled with the winding stem or the crown. This results in the balance continuing to oscillate and the movement continuing to run despite the crown being pulled out, which considerably reduces wear and tear on materials. The reset mechanism is activated by pushing a small corrector in the right side of the case, just above the crown.

A bi-directional winding rotor delivers energy to a patented, stepped reduction gear, and then to two smaller, serially operating spring barrels. Large amounts of energy are transmitted to the mainspring, and the spring barrel is charged quickly. Caliber 100-14 features the characteristic Glashütte three-quarter plate, screw-mounted gold chatons, and a rotor with 21-carat gold oscillating weight.

A personal note: I think it would have been logical if Glashütte Original had decided to make this a limited edition of 100 pieces, especially because it in celebration of the 100th anniversary of reaching the geographic South Pole.

This exceptional timepiece, handmade in the firm’s manufactory and limited to 25 pieces, pays homage to the pioneering spirit of two extraordinary men, Julius Assmann and Roald Amundsen.

Julius Assmann started his company at the age of 25 and is revered today as one of the founding fathers of watchmaking in Glashütte. Pocket watches, chronometers and observation watches crafted by Assmann and his employees were to play a significant role in establishing the company’s far-reaching reputation: the observation watches in particular were known for their remarkable precision and superior craftsmanship.

Before setting out on his historic voyage, Roald Amundsen acquired a number of Assmann observation watches, including one crafted by the young Glashütte watchmaker Paul Löwe in 1907/08.

Löwe’s watch proved to be exceptionally precise, and he was urged to send it for testing to the German Naval Observatory in Hamburg, the institute officially responsible for testing and certifying the accuracy of navigational timekeepers made in Germany. It was there that Roald Amundsen saw the watch, and he purchased it in 1910.

On December 14th, 1911, the Norwegian polar explorer and his team became the first persons ever to reach the geographic South Pole.

Observation watches, also known as “deck watches” were used by navigation officers in conjunction with marine chronometers and other instruments to determine as precisely as possible a ship’s position at sea, and Amundsen will have made good use of his observation watches during his voyage to Antarctica on the polar ship, Fram. Once he and his team set out from their base camp at Framheim on the Bay of Whales, however, the time kept by his observation watches became the only standard: one watch was set to a home time and assumed the function of the marine chronometer on a ship; a second watch was set to local time; measurement of the difference between the two was used to calculate, using spherical trigonometry, the team’s position during the trek to the South Pole; a compass and sextant were also used. Thus, Amundsen’s observation watches were absolutely critical to his mission: without them, he could never have reached his destination, much less claimed victory for Norway. In Oslo today, the Fram Museum displays, along with many other artifacts documenting the historic trek, one of Amundsen’s Glashütte observation watches, complete with the inscription

Observation watches continued to be manufactured in Glashütte until 1971, a testament to the ongoing production of high quality timepieces even during challenging times.

We love it, the Friday Wristshot post that has become a custom on many forums. These Glashütte Original Senator Hand Date and vintage Longines Conquest where posted at Timezone UK.

The Glashütte Original Senator Hand Date was released in 2009 and was meant as an understated and elegant timepiece. The 40 mm stainless steel case is 11.2 mm thick, which makes a nice and comfortable watch to wear daily to the office. And like all GO’s, it features a gorgeous in-house movement. But that’s not today’s topic…

What Timezone UK member Andsan did in such a beautiful and stylish way, is to capture his watch together with some other items. Combined with the lighting, it creates a very warm and elegant atmosphere. This is one of the tricks to make gorgeous photos of a watch, it is however not easy. You have to find the perfect items and colors and use the correct light.

Somehow the ‘atmosphere’ in these photo resemble the photo of the Roger Dubuis Monégasque Club with its gorgeous Chesterfield-style strap. He did the same with his vintage Longines Conquest. And let’s be honest, this is another great photo. A good glass of malt whisky to enjoy and a nice gold watch to admire.

The time that a small diameter watch with a row of diamonds was believed to be the perfect women’s watch is long gone. A growing number of women in the market for a high end watch are seriously interested in the movement. Quartz is no longer the obvious choice, and a mechanical movement can proof to be a selling point.

However, most brands that use high grade mechanical movements still have the tendency to put them in precious metal cases and adorn them with diamonds or other gemstones. A beautiful option for a romantic dinner or a night out in the town, but for the everyday life she might want to opt for something a little more robust. Where can a woman turn to when she wants a good looking, steel watch, without gemstones but with a high-end, preferably in-house, movement that might even feature a complication? Here are 4 watches that do just that!

Omega Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph Ladies - For women with an active life style, or simply a taste for a more sporty watch, Omega offers the Seamaster Planet Ocean chrono in a ladies size.

With its diameter of 37.5 mm it offers everything that one would expect from a serious diving chronograph. Unidirectional bezel, helium escape valve and a 600 meters /2000 feet water resistance. The true beauty of this serious piece of machinery lies in its movement. Omega uses caliber 3313 in this Planet Ocean, not to be confused with the new caliber 9300 of the new mens Seamaster Planet Ocean Chronograph, that is too large in diameter for a ladies watch. Caliber 3313 is an automatic chronograph movement with a column wheel, George Daniel’s Co-axial escapement and is even Chronometer-certified. Women should know that “Great watch you wear!” is not (always) a pick up line when they wear a sports watch of this statue, but an honest compliment. The price is around $ 7,000 USD.

Glashütte Original Lady Serenade Chronograph - A different take on the chronograph can be found with Glashütte Original. The Lady Serenade Chronograph has far more elegant lines then Omega’s Planet Ocean, but is surprisingly larger.

The Glashütte measures 38mm in diameter and its steel case houses the manufacture caliber 39-31. This automatic chronograph movement features a swan neck, 21 karat gold rotor insert and no less than 51 jewels. This high amount of jewels is partially due to the fact that the movement is constructed on a base movement with a chronograph module. It gracefully displays time on an elegant mother-of-pearl dial, and features nice details like an unusual styled crown, set with an Onyx cabochon. The Lady Serenade seems to offer the best of both worlds; elegant lines and details combined with a robustly sized case (not only because of its diameter but also thanks to its thickness of 12,3 mm) that protects the in-house movement. Priced at roughly $ 12,000 USD.

Blancpain Women Double Time Zone - For women who prefer a different complication then the chronograph, Blancpain offers a watch with a second time zone. For some reason Blancpain simply named the ladies collection “Women” and this particular model is called Women Double Time Zone.

As home of the Villeret, Léman and Le Brassus collections, this name is a bit bland to say the least. Fortunately the watch itself is everything but bland! Blancpain uses an ultra slim automatic movement that is only 3.25mm thick. Besides hours, minutes, date and a nice sub seconds does it also shows a second time zone at 12 o’clock with an am/pm indicator at 9. The watch has a very balanced look to it. This is very important because it is only 34mm in diameter, so the dial has also less space to display all its information. A nice touch is the guilloche on the dial, giving the watch something of a sporty look. Blancpain offers the watch on a satin strap, but your local dealer might be persuaded to swap this for an alligator strap giving the watch a totally different look and making it more wearable in the process. The price is also around $ 12,000 USD.

Saskia Maaike Bouvier 8 Moons - Dare to be different? Or do you have the desire of wearing a watch made by an Independent? The Saskia Maaike Bouvier most certainly has a unique complication for you, housed in a bold design. Her ’8 Moons’ comes in a 45mm case that displays no less than…..8 moons!

This way you can see not only the current moon phase but also keep track of its progress during the week. Bouvier created this complication because women tend to be more sensitive to the lunar cycle then men. We beg to differ and would suggest that Bouvier quickly creates a mens version of this watch. By far the coolest part of this watch are the moons that form the outer ring of the dial and are actually filled in with Luminova! This provides for a more then spectacular look when the night falls. The inner part of the dial is partially open, showing not only parts of its inner working, but also indicating the hours with Roman numerals cut out of the dial. Apart from that the watch has nice details like pink(!) lacquered hands (grey is also available). All together this young and innovative watchmaker introduces quite a stunning watch that will probably make some men quite envious. Sorry guys, it is still a ladies only model! Price starts a bit above $ 22,000 USD.

It is safe to say that in the 1990’s the Swiss had the monopoly when it came to high-end sport chronographs with a manufacture movement. However, that was about to change, at least a little bit, when Glashütte Original introduced their Sport Chronograph, proudly made in Germany!

Glashütte Original shared much of the same faith as Lange & Söhne and Mühle. After WWII they where hidden from the eye of the world behind the Iron Curtain, making watches (if any at all) that where solid but could hardly live up to the “capitalistic” glory these companies once knew. The fall of the Berlin Wall brought them back to life and former glory. Glashütte Original originates from the VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe, often better known as GUB (Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe), which was the result of a large merger in 1951 that included basically all the watch related industry in Glashütte. In 1990 this became Glashütter Uhrenbetrieb GmbH that in 1994 was purchased by Heinz W. Pfeifer and in 2000 joined the Swatch-group.

One of the big advantages of Glashütte Original was that even during the decades behind the Iron Curtain they had continued to make their own watches from almost scratch. That is evidently in the Sport Chronograph. The first series had caliber GUB 10-60 as their movement. This high frequency movement was modular, and based on caliber GUB 10-30. As can be expected from a German product this caliber was a solid movement and completely made in Glashütte, even down to the ball-bearings of the rotor. Later Glashütte Original replaced caliber 10-60 for caliber 39-31 (see photo below). This new movement was not so much better but a little fancier on the details. The whole movement was better decorated and had a better finish, it had a swan-neck fine adjustment and the rotor was skeletonized and fitted with a 21 karat gold oscillation weight.

Wither you had the old or the new movement, the Sport Chronograph was always fitted with a sapphire glass back, secured with 8 screws, so that you could admire the “ engine” of this watch. The whole design was a smart combination of sportiness and class. Just as with it’s Swiss competitors, this Glashütte Original felt equally at home with jeans and a polo, as half hidden under the sleeves of a suit and shirt. The 12 sided bezel and case design gives the Sport Chronograph a slight reminisce of the Royal Oak from Audemars Piguet, but there ends any real resembles with other watches. The case has a very high finish and the large, rectangular chronograph pushers are easy to use and cleverly mask the fact that this is a modular movement. The Sport Chronograph lacks a date, but in return offers a very balanced design of the dial. Despite some nice touches like the triangular hour makers, the rest of the dial is what we come to expect from a German manufacturer; straight forward and easy to read.

Although the Sport Chronograph could be bought on a strap, the bracelet certainly offered added appeal. It’s unique design resemblance something that best can be described as ice cubes.

Glashütte Original offered the Sport Chronograph in two sizes; a 43mm Senior model (the earlier model with caliber 10-60 was 1mm smaller) and a 39,5mm Medium model. The case size was the only difference and both where offered in either steel, gold/steel or solid gold. That solid gold part is something that Glashütte Original took very seriously. The Senior version on a strap featured almost 100 grams of 18k gold, weiging a total of around 135 grams with all other parts added.

This photo perfectly shows the incredible finish of the Sport Chronograph’s case. That’s one serious chunk of gold!

This particular Sport Chronograph is now discontinued, but still lives on in the current Sport Evolution Chronograph. Gone are the 12 sided bezel and case, as is the “ice cube” bracelet, but the appeal of a German made manufacture chronograph is still there, ready to take on anything it’s owner desires to.

After the Senator Sixties, Glashütte Original launches the Seventies Seventies Panorama Date for this years Baselworld fair. Again a strong design from this German manufacture.

When Glashütte Original presented the Senator Sixties a few years ago at Baselwolrd I was very much impressed by the daring design of this watch. I liked i so much that I bought an old Glashütte with the exact same numerals on the dial. Now I see the newest release from Glashütte Original and again I have this WOW feeling. The new Seventies Panorama Date…

There will be three different models of the Seventies Panorama Date, all with that distinct seventies character. The dial is made of German silver and will be available in galvanized silver, galvanized ruthenium or blue.

The ruthenium dial presents a sunburst surface while the silver version is beautifully matt. The blue dial features finely graded shading passing from a lighter centre to a darker periphery. Depending on the choice of dial, the hands and applied indexes will come in white or rose gold.

The sapphire crystal case back is domed and offers the extra comfort on the wrist. Its bracelet has the same seventies look and feel andperfectly matches with the square case. The bracelet looks a bit like an oyser bracalet, but has extra thin links (both polished and brushed) in between.

To adjust the bracelet, Glashütte Original developed a new (and patented) closing and adjusting mechanism. The integrated double G logo functions as both the clasp’s button and the activator for the fine adjustment mechanism, which can be adjusted a total of eight millimeters in eight steps. The elements are screwed to one another with no room for interplay between them so that they are much more stable than links joined by pins. The double security mechanism with two buttons on either side hinders an accidental opening of the clasp.

The movement that drives teh hands and panorama date, is the proven Caliber 39-47 automatic movement. This caliber is also used in the Senator Sixties Panorama Date.

GO’s Seventies Panorama Date is 40 x 40 mm large and it is 11.5mm thick. The sapphire crystal at the dial side is anti-reflective coated on both inside and outside. It has a signed screw-down crown and is water resistant to 100 meters!

Third European GTG by Horomundi

Last saturday was the third European GTG for Horomundi members. The joy of meeting fellow watch aficionados and sharing our passion for fine watches didn’t last long enough…

After attending the first European GTG in November 2007, i just can’t get enough of these kind of meetings. The second European GTG, a two day event, was also the launch of Holland’s most prestigious watch brand Grönefeld with the Grönefeld GTM-06. I could inform you about the activities, organized by Wim, Horomundi moderator the Glashütte-Original forum…. However let that just be a sweet memory for those present and go on to the part most of us are moved by… the watches!

Rene Marx from Glashütte Original came all the way from Germany to share the afternoon with us and show Glashütte Original’s novelties from Baselworld. Not only this year’s novelties where present, but also two watches which, in my opinion, do not get enough attention, the Senator Chronometer and the Senator Sixties collection.

During such a meeting everyone wears at least one, but usually two watches. Most people find this the best way to bring their two favorite watches. Late in the afternoon i shot some photos of the wrists present, however i didn’t photograph everyone’s wrist. The watches missing in the photo collection below: Grönefeld GTM-06 in platinum, URWERK 103T Mexican Fireleg, Bremont MB2, Rolex Airking, my own d.m.h and probably several more.

The GTG was, again, something unique. Getting the chance to see 3 URWERK’s, a Jean Daniel Nicholas tourbillon and 2 Grönefeld’s GTM-06… my goodness! A mere mortal does not often get the chance to see so many beautifully crafted and finished, complex and highly complicated watches at once.

Here are’s a photo Ian Skellern made of the 3 URWERK’s: 103T Mexican Fireleg, 103T AlTiN and a black 103 that i have never seen before.

In the evening Tim and Bart Grönefeld presented their new watch, the Grönefeld One Hertz. I’m still very much impressed with the independent deadbeat seconds and because this mechanism is incredibly rare, the chance you’ll find it on other watches is next to zero. When there’s more news, maybe a video of how the deadbeat seconds mechanism works, i will keep you informed of course.

Baselworld 2010 – Glashütte Original

Glashütte Original already shows us 2 of their new models for Baselworld. The new Senator Sixties PanorameDate and the PanoMaticLunar XL. I think we already have a winner!

The Glashütte Original Senator Sixties, which was released during Baselworld 2007, received massive applause from watch lover all around the world. In 2008 they released a chronograph version, that was also praised. Last year Glashütte Original released yet another version of the Senator Sixties, the Sixties Square Chronograph.

This year finally a version with the typical Glashütte Original Panorama Date, the Senator Sixties Panorama Date. The normal Senator Sixties is in my opinion a beautiful and stylish dress watch, however with addition of the Panorama Date it has a function that is great for daily wear at the office as well.

I think Glashütte Original did a good job positioning the Panorama Date not at the 3 position or between 4 and 5, but centered above the 6 position. This way the dial looks very balanced. Another good detail, GO paid attention to is the black date disks and the white numbers. Well done!

This new model is available with a black or silver dial. The black dial has silver Arabic numerals, white gold baton hour, minute and seconds hands and hour markers. The silver dial has black Arabic numerals, rose gold hands and hour markers and the Panorama Date has black numerals on a white background.

The 42 mm large stainless steel case is 3 mm bigger than the time-only version. Other features like the domed sapphire crystal in front (with anti-reflective coating on both sides) and the sapphire crystal in the back (single sided anti-reflective coating) that is shaped around the movement are still the same.

Until now the PanoMaticLunar XL was only available in rose and white gold. This year Glashütte Original releases a version in stainless steel and with a new dial color…. grey. After another PanoMatic XL model that totally rocked my boat, yet another model in this collection that i just adore. . I think it’s absolutely beautiful and i’m really looking forward to seeing it ‘in the metal’ during Baselworld.

Glashütte Original donates a one of a kind watch to Italian Cancer Research Organization AIRC. And to be honest, this watch is so beautiful that i hope it will be part of the novelties Baselworld 2010!

Patrizzi & Co will auction 40 watches during the Italian national day of cancer, November 26th. All proceeds will go to the Italian cancer research. Earlier this year i already blogged about the Only Watch 2009 auction Patrizzi & Co did for another good cause. For this auction, Glashütte Original donates a unique version of the PanoMaticReserve XL. This one is so beautiful… that i’m sad that it’s a one of a kind…. Glashütte Original PanoMaticReserveXL - piece unique

The regular Glashütte Original PanoMaticReserveXL, only available in white or rose gold, has a diameter of 42mm and is 12.5mm thick. This piece unique has a steel case with PVD coating, which suits this model very well. Instead of the usual red accents, Glashütte Original has chosen yellow.

The beautiful silver markers are applied and next to every marker, as well as on the hands, is luminous material to make it possible to tell the time in the dark. The use of yellow as accent, they went further than on the regular PanoMaticReserveXL models, which have the date in white on black date disks. Inside ticks manufacture caliber 90-03 that gives 42 hours of power reserve. The beautifully finished movement has 61 jewels, the Glashütte three-quater plate, hand engraved balance bridge and a double swan-neck fine adjustment.

Glashütte Original was one of the most impressive brands at this year’s Baselworld. Last week i was invited by Glashütte Original to see the Baselworld novelties which are about to be delivered to the dealers.

With the Senator Meissen Tourbillon and the Senator Chronometer, Glashütte Original has two watches in my Baselworld 2009 top 10. Merdal Güler, brand manager for the Netherlands, and Wim Koster, moderator of the GO forum at Horomundi, invited a few friends for dinner in the College Hotel in Amsterdam. It was an evening in the excellent company of good friend, with great food and amazing watches. At Horomundi Wim posted a full report of the evening and all watches. Glashütte Original PanoReserve

Before dinner we had a nice glass of bubbles in the garden of the College Hotel. Sitting there outside in a nice and quiet place in the middle of Amsterdam was a strange experience. Amsterdam is not one of the most quiet places on earth We talked about watches in general, the watch industry and of course the all new collection Glashütte Original presented at Baselworld this year. And while talking we got the chance to see them all. My absolute favorite… the Senator Chronometer.

With it’s classic dial it looks like a vintage ship’s chronometer. The dial is slightly off-white which looks very attractive with the classic roman numbers. Besides the great looks, functionally it’s also a winner. The typical Glashütte Original PanoDate has been improved and now changes date instantly at midnight, while other PanoDate models take around 20 minutes to change date. Another great function is the day/night indication dot. Perfect for setting the time. Another great feature for setting time, is that the second hand resets to 12 when the crown is pulled. And yet another superb feature for setting time, is that the minute hands jumps in full minutes when the time is adjusted. I am deeply impressed with this achievement of Glashütte Original… Of the big brands the Senator Chronometer is the absolute the winner of Baselworld 2009.

Glashütte Original Senator Meissen Tourbillon

The Senator Meissen Tourbillon… the rose gold case, the beautiful meissen dial and a tourbillon. Another great achievement, especially cutting the round hole in the meissen dial. Meissen is very vulnerable so cutting the perfect round hole is very difficult. I love the looks of the watch, but it’s not a watch i would wear. Just not a huge fan of holes in dials. But this does not mean i’m not impressed… it’s still in my Baselworld 2009 top 10.

And of course i had to try the Senator Sixties Square Chronograph. Nice isn’t it?
